History
Christ the King was established as a
parish in 1974. Prior to 1974, Catholics living in Abingdon met each
other at homes and churches in Marion and Bristol. Later, as the parish
grew St. John's Lutheran Church allowed the fledgling parish to use its
facilities.
The present building was built in
1983. Within a few years the parish hall was added. The parish has
shared a pastor with the Marion community of St. John's. The pastor has
residence in both towns. At present, the parishioners do parish work.
The priest is the only paid staff therefore volunteers are necessary for
the parish to function.
